With the introduction of VoIP (voice over ip) the telephone company we know it now, is suffering a slow death . It’s becoming increasing common that business and residential phone service are switching from public switched network (PSTN) to VoIP (voice over IP) where calls are routed over the internet, making it cheaper to make telephone calls. Traditional telephone service is hard wired and can’t moved from one location to another or if another connection is needed (a second phone line) a the phone company has to send some one out. No so with VoIP, your phone number and the phone adapter can travel with you anywhere in the world where there is an internet connection. All calls are treated as local calls.

VoIP is not that new the concept has been around since 1990, but phone companies were afraid it would destroy their long distance revenue. Some cell phone providers actively try to block VoIP from their network. thers, like T-Mobile, have refused to connect with VoIP networks. T-Mobile and a company call Truephone, a mobile VoIP provider went to court over T-Mobiles claims and the UK High Court found in favor of the VoIP carrier. Since then VoIP has become one of the mainstays In IP usage for large corporations, small and mid-size business, and residential phone service.

Features that you have to pay for with traditional phone companies are free with VoIP. Some the features are caller id w/ name, call waiting, find me, follow me, conference calling , and more.

The Wireless Communication and Public Safety Act in 1999 required connected VoIP providers to E911 to their customers. This put many VoIP providers out of business and many still making the change.

The old ways of telephone calling no longer apply. VoIP is here to stay…
